CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
Freya
I wiped my hands clean of the disgusting blue liquid. I had stained my dress in the process, but I had hundreds of dresses; it wouldnât be too much of a sacrifice. My babies knew the price for a failed mission, they knew what was expected when they disappointed me, and they did make minimal fuss, but still it pained me. Such a waste of my hard work. Still, I could make more, I could make plenty more.
My other children cleaned up the mess, and I went to change my clothes.
Walking past the musty, blood-stained cells, I checked how my new babies were doing. Some were coming along nicely, their human eyes already pale, their skin turning a lovely blue colour, bones enlarging, their minds being wiped. Others however, were taking longer, their minds and bodies were more resilient. They screamed and tried to fight the confines of their cell, but it was a wasted effort; I would get them in the end.
My children had brought me some findings from the hospital a few weeks ago. Not Jennifer unfortunately, who continued to elude me, but others. Some adults, some children, and although they possessed some interesting abilities, they were not as strong as me, and they succumbed to my influence. The last of them, I think she was around seven, she had a strong mind, and she was feisty, she bit and scratched me and tried to run away, but we caught her, and she spent the rest of the transition process in a straight-jacket. A few days later it emerged from the cell; tall, beautiful, powerful, and joined the others. Iâm a lucky mother.
I finally reached the top of the steps leading up to my room, and unlocked my door. No one was allowed in here, this was my haven, different to the rest of my house, where I could forget that I had actually been trapped here for one hundred and fifty years. Those stupid magic men, those shaman idiots, I would get them eventually.
I thought back painfully on my few failed attempts to leave this place, only to be bound to it even stronger. Well, when I get my power back, when I get what was taken from me, I would be able to leave forever.
I closed the door behind me, and marvelled at my room. It really was beautiful; I felt safe here, serene.
Books ran from one side of the wall all the way to the other end, books about the world, my mentor always stressed the importance of being well read. A large rug made out of real tiger fur caressed my feet as I slipped off my shoes. I was starting to get hard skin on my feet, disgusting. Perhaps this body wasnât as young as she looked.
A large bed lay towards the back. I slept wonderfully there, a globe of the world stood in the centre. At the end was my wardrobe. It was large, filled with beautiful gowns and dresses, sparkling jewellery and diamond studded shoes.
